I’ve always wondered why this film is never spoken in the same breath with “Shane” or “The Searchers”. “Enormous” Westerns are usually described as being story in scale, but “The Unforgiven” has an authentic feel to it. From the dusty see everything has, to the sod hut the family lives in, to the realistic period dress, this movie has a search for that is unlike any other I have seen. The DVD has the best print and sound I have seen and heard since the film was released in 1960, with sharper definition and bolder colors than before (obviously better than the VHS tape) . Some viewers may obtain slight faults here and there, but overall this film needs to be viewed by any lover of Western movies.

This is the best western I have ever seen. I knew it would be a classic at age 10 when I first saw it in a movie theater in Tacoma, Washington. And time has not changed that. I would give it 6 stars, if possible. The cast and their performances are intellectual, especially Charles Bickford as the clan patriarch, Burt Lancaster, Audrey Hepburn, and all the others. The music is substantial and the residence is ever so enchanting. No western that I have ever seen has even near conclude to undertaking the complexities of accelerate relations (a term scarcely known in 1850) in the Wild West. One of the most intense scenes I have ever seen on film is when they are about to hang the conventional Hunter, Abe Kelsey. This is simply a John Huston masterpiece. Every camera shot is outstanding and the dialog is helpful. You can never forget Kelsey’s warning, “You ALL turn to devils! Devils!” Incidentally, altho I have forgotten his staunch name (John Wiseman? ) I possess he also had a bit share in “Masada” as another type of prophet-patriarch. Forget about the fluff & huff of unique, politically factual “westerns” of today’s producers, with their blow-dried hair doos. If you want an authentic western at its best, this is a must discover. And you’re entire family can peep it. No -F- words, of course. That in itself is testimony to another era of golden film making — all acting, no cheapness. “The Unforgiven” goes into my book as one of the top 10, all time expansive movies.

As a obsolete home schooled spirit filled church raised child I was appalled at this movie. The main reason why is because I saw a kindly bit of my childhood in it. I was a product of brainwashing and spiritual abuse through “camps” like this. Frankly this movie was scarier than any awe movie I have ever seen. I mediate every Christian should study this movie so they can pick up a perspective on what it looks like from the outside in. For heavens sake, Ted Haggard was in this movie talking about the secret things people do in their lives honest before he was exposed as a closeted homosexual. I hope this documentary opens the eyes of all christian parents about the importance of balance in a childs life and allowing them to create some of the decisions about their christianity on their believe and not throwing them to the spiritual wolves like this. I am 30 years archaic and Composed recovering. I care for the Lord with all of my heart and he is so mighty cooler than the God portrayed in this movie.

We live in the Golden Age of the movie documentary. While mainstream fictional movies have for a decade been in an ongoing creative and qualitative roam (in fact, if you want big fictional visual memoir, television far surpasses film both in excellence and in intelligence), we have witnessed an explosion in high quality movie documentaries. Allotment of the reason is certainly technological. Until relatively recently documentary filmmakers were forced to work either with extremely expensive film cameras or indecent quality video cameras. With the advent of compact high-quality digital cameras, however, any documentarian can product extremely noble looking footage that looks immense even when blown up to the size of a movie theater veil. The field no longer belongs exclusively to geniuses like Errol Morris but to anyone with a edifying notion and a camera.

I give this five stars and it deserves this, but I want to stress that this film really is a very diminutive behold into contemporary evangelicalism. The people in this film are not merely evangelicals, but Pentecostals. They actually are quite different from most evangelicals and especially, for instance, Southern Baptists. How? First, Pentecostalism is very grand based in emotionalism and feeling and far less in Biblical teachings. This is apparent from watching JESUS CAMP. If one is a student of the Bible one will be tremulous at how shrimp the Bible is mentioned by the people in the film and what a exiguous role it plays in their religious experience. In fact, at one point a young girl mocks what she imagines to be the fancy experience in a mainstream church, where they notify three hymns and listen to a sermon. But in many of those churches what one hears in the sermon is a careful exegesis of passages of Scripture. Few or no Southern Baptist churches feature the emotionalism found by the kids in JESUS CAMP. This is primary to preserve in mind since Southern Baptists absolutely dominate the Religious True in America.

The second thing I want to mention is that the film does not note the plot that evangelicalism has begun to part in the United States. There are at least three major issues evangelicals are currently splitting over nationally, with promise of many more. First and so far foremost, the environment. Many evangelicals simply cannot derive the absurdity that global warming is not taking situation and is not caused by human activity. Even some major figures within the upper echelon of the Religious Lawful power structure are fragmenting on this enlighten. Pat Robertson himself has announced that he now believes both that global warming is steady and humans cause it. As the mountain of evidence pointing to the reality of global warming is building into a mountain range, more and more evangelicals are accepting the positive. And with many passages in the Bible speaking of the need to be faithful stewards of the earth and not its exploiters, the pro-environment segment of the evangelical movement is excellent to gather more and more traction. Second, although the Religious Apt has a come obsession with abortion, the brute fact is that the Bible does not address the deliver directly a single time (despite the fact that there were abortive procedures practiced at the time, as John M. Riddle has documented in his worthy book EVE’S HERBS: A HISTORY OF CONTRACEPTION AND ABORTION IN THE WEST) . On the other hand, the Bible in general and the Recent Testament especially speaks incessantly about caring for the dreadful. Because worthy of the Religious Accurate embraces an obsession with the acquisition of material goods, which clashes strongly with everything we study in the Recent Testament, this has engenders a reaction from many evangelical leaders who feel that Christians are called to both eschew wanton consumerism and to support care for those who lack the basic physical necessities. Thirdly, evangelicals are splitting, like most of the rest of American already has, over Iraq and George Bush. If in this film Bush is presented as an object of almost religious adoration, many evangelicals have reach to scrutinize Iraq as a ugly mistake and many others are alarmed by the draw Republican political policies have favored the wealthy at the expense of both the middle classes and the bad.

Nonetheless, this is a quick-witted portrait of Pentecostal evangelicalism in the United States. As stated in the film evangelicals originate up 25% of the electorate. I do not know what percentage Pentecostals construct up of evangelicals, but I would be surprised if it was as grand as a third. It is probably grand less. Most evangelicals most assuredly do not disclose in tongues. Quiet, they do piece many beliefs with many other evangelicals, such as the ahistorical opinion that America was founded as a Christian nation and that somehow Jesus has been removed from American life (whereas in fact at the time of the ratification of the constitution the Founders intentionally began the preamble with no mention of God but instead stated that the nation was founded by “We, the People”–also, hundreds of Christians and ministers denounced the “Godless” constitution at the time of ratification and afterward for nearly two centuries, until evangelicals beginning in the 1980s began formulating the tale of the founding of the United States as a Christian nation, an conception that would have terrified all the Founders, but in particular the vital architect of the Constitution, the avid supporter of Church-state separation, James Madison) . Most evangelicals are also avidly anti-abortion, though most are unaware that for almost a decade after Roe v. Wade virtually no evangelicals leaders made any public statements about. In fact, evangelical icon W. A. Criswell actually praised the decision shortly after it was announced, stating that it was simply popular sense for a woman to have control of her body (for those who do not know Criswell, one of the members of the evangelical pantheon, he was Billy Graham’s pastor) . As Randall Balmer has shown in his reliable book THY KINGDOM Advance, the Religious Legal only began to campaign against abortion after the revocation of the tax-exempt plot of some religious organizations, a fact that many leaders of the Religious Factual are acutely aware (but which fact they certainly do not want to advertise) . And like many evangelicals Pentecostals are suspicious of evolution and science. So while the film sloughs over some of the truly primary differences between the various kinds of evangelicals, there are a number of themes that hurry through all. My only complaint with the film is that you have to already have accumulated a vast deal of knowledge about evangelicalism to produce these distinctions.

The scenes that filmmakers Heidi Ewing and Rachel Grady shot are frequently chilling. It is clear that these awful children are being brainwashed and indoctrinated in a manner that is no different than what happens with Islamic extremists. It is horrible that many of them answer this and do not seem scared by it. It breaks your heart viewing the film because these seem like really, really nice kids. I kept having to fight the sense that what is being done to the awful kids is a construct of child abuse. One scene in particular bugged me. A really sweet girl walked up to a resplendent blonde girl in a bowling alley with a gospel tract and gave it to her with the words, “Jesus told me to give this to you.” Of course Jesus did no such thing (in fact, history is replete with thousands of horrors that various people inflicted on others because they claimed God had told them to) . I was raised in the culture. I understand the pressures that are placed on children to “seek” for Christ and to “piece their testimony.” As a child I was conscious of how desperately gloomy I was with going up to a total stranger and “telling them about Christ,” but didn’t contain the insight to realize the amount of self-righteousness required to come someone of whom you know nothing and presume that they lack what you have to give them. So when watching this awful girl, I couldn’t serve but deem of the sinister things that are parents are doing to her.

Unlike some reviewers I did not net Ted Haggard creepy. Brilliant now what we do about him it is all too easy to declare a creepiness that we feel simply had to be there. I remember something the Catholic devotional writer Henri Nouwen said to me once (for two years Henri hired me to edit, type, and proofread his manuscripts, and also to orderly up his English prose–English was his second language and his first drafts often contained infelicities of expression) . The church, he said, is the most wicked spot in the world because that is because it is filled with people who answer that they are sinners. I agree that Ted Haggard’s are ironical given his constant attacks on homosexuality, but my acquire feeling is that most people are afflicted by a host of internal inconsistencies. In seeing Ted Haggard I was instead struck by how droll and likable he was. He was witty, obliging, and personable. And yes, in light of his subsequent downfall (the revelations of his involvement with a tickled prostitute and drug utilize and its apparent confirmation when he resigned from his church broke shortly before the 2006 midterm election and the last in a long string of Republican scandals was viewed as a factor in the Democratic victories) a complete hypocrite. But I disclose he is no worse than most of us.

The lone utter of reason in the film is the trial lawyer and radio journalist Mike Papantonio, who is shown during a broadcast of the “Ring of Fire” radio point to on Air America, which he cohosts with Robert J. Kennedy Jr. What I like about Papantonio is that he clearly is as devout as any of the people in the film, but the faith he finds in the Unusual Testament is so completely at odds with those found in the summer camp featured so prominently in the film. I was so delighted he was included in the documentary, if for no other reason than to explain that there are Christians who haven’t lost their wits.

This film really is important viewing, but as I pointed out above, it is not representative of evangelicalism as a whole. If one truly wants a balanced concept of evangelicalism in America I would recommend two books to supplement this film. One is Randall Balmer’s MINE EYES HAVE SEEN THE GLORY: A Hotfoot IN THE SUBCULTURE IN AMERICA, which is published by Oxford University Press and was the basis for a PBS documentary. This will provide a far more comprehensive portrait of contemporary evangelicalism. I also strongly recommend Rev. Gregory Boyd’s THE Narrative OF A CHRISTIAN NATION. You will earn no Christian writer more devout than Boyd and no one who is more careful in the analysis of Scripture. But as a Bible-believing Christian Boyd comes to very different conclusions than the people found in JESUS CAMP. But I do not fill that anyone who has actually read the Bible will accept their positions closer to the steady reveal of the Bible and Novel Testament than Boyd’s. Non-Christians will be impressed that it is possible to combine deep religious devotion with shameful intelligence, resulting in positions that are both Christian and knowing.

It’s hard to possess that an innocuous PG-13 B-movie such as the Chiodo Bros. underrated masterpiece “Killer Klowns From Outer Situation” could instill a sense of mysterious terror and thrills to an inveterate awe fan like myself. The Klowns definitely demolish down the redundant slasher film villian barriers that ran rampant during the 80’s and give a frighteningly fresh, yet droll flair to their unpleasant work that parallels the used alien invasion films of the 50’s (proper down to the backwoods farmer and his dog and to the overly-skeptical village police) . These extraterrestial jokesters are by no means makers of fun merriment, but rather ravenous predators who hoodwink their victims with circus magic and snide smiles.

The first time I viewed this acclaimed cult classic, John Mussari’s ominous circus synth soundtrack, grizzled Officer Mooney (John Vernon) turned into a klown merrionette, and the corrosive cream pie death of the security guard each made a horrible impact on me! Not only that, I developed a short-lived repulsion to cotton candy after seeing the homicidal Klowns in action! Now, that I’m older, wiser, and even more desensitized, I’ve begun to view “Killer Klowns From Outer Site” as 70% comedy/30% anxiety since this film does boast some of the most baffoonish dialogue and action I’ve seen in a B-movie. Mike (Grant Cramer), Officer Mooney, and the hilariously inept Terrenzi Bros. (Peter Licassi & Mike Siegel) give objective the lawful amount of comedic chemistry needed against the story’s spooky premise. The Klowns themselves do offer a couple of cheesy chuckles via the duplicitous “child’s play” antics they employ to select and expunge the town populace for their absorb vampiric food supply. And one honest cannot pick up over the elaborately designed circus tent sets, props, and klown costumes! The theme song video feature by The Dickies is also elegant darn chilly. All in all, this indelible pic proves that 1988 was a gem year for the terror genre.

I have been fortunate enough to gain a previously-viewed copy of KKFOS this year after a near-exhaustive search on the Web! I found it through Amazon’s zShop place, which may smooth have some English-version copies left (gleaming that this film has become a rare obtain both in retail and rental) . I wish Media Home Entertainment/HVG Video would salvage off their languid behinds and re-release the Klowns on VHS widescreen or DVD seeing that the Killer Klowns cult is bigger than they probably realize.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Killer Klowns from Outer Space! Click Here

Believe it or not, a Klown sequel is in the planning stages according to the Chiodo Bros’ official website (as well as a coveted email I received last year from Stephen himself) …so withhold on watching the skies for more intergalatic Vast Top mayhem and laughs!

Anybody who says all the best B-movies came from the fifties obviously hasn’t seen this puny gem. It really is an admirable allotment of film making which is actually very clever and inventive. It is reminiscent in someways of The Blob (50s version) in that a teenage couple look a “comet” descend from the sky and then utilize the movie running around trying to come by people to maintain them. However, this is far more “tongue in cheek” than most movies in its genre and could almost be passed as a dark comedy rather than a dismay.

The movie isn’t particularly scary, although I do remeber finding it very freaky when I was younger. People who have a phobia of clowns should probably pause away from this movie though, because as the title suggests thay are the stars of the reveal. It is worth watching for the inventive and laughable ways in which the “Klowns” Demolish and cocoon their victims alone. But as it happens the film also has a lot more to offer as well. Try as hard as you can to come by bear of this movie because it really is a classic. It took me a couple of years of searching but now i’ve got it and it was definately worth the pains.

First of all…to all High School students out there who are required to read Steinbeck’s book “Cannery Row” …if you try to net by with unprejudiced watching this movie and writing your describe your grade will suffer! Oh, it has nothing to do with the quality of the film…I’ll catch to that later, it’s unbiased that this film is a blending of two of Steinbeck’s books, “Cannery Row” and “Sweet Thursday.” Both of those stories are site along Cannery Row in Pacific Grove/Monterey, CA, and have many of the same characters in them, but unless you already know the stories you may well include material from “Sweet Thursday” in your relate on “Cannery Row,” and…OOPS…there goes the extinct grade! So, beware! Now…on with the review…

Nolte plays “Doc” the main character in the epic. His character is based on a exact life person, a marine scientist named Ed Ricketts who lived and worked along Cannery Row (which was certainly not the tourist attraction in the 1930s-40s that it is today) . You can, by the method, unexcited discover the building where Doc Ricketts worked if you visit Pacific Grove…it’s unbiased down the road from the Monterey Bay Aquarium. OK, OK, enough history, wait on to the movie…

Nolte does a substantial job of playing the out of the procedure, but not really down and out “Doc.” Things are going along smoothly until Winger hits the scene, then there’s romance in the air, though it doesn’t land until great later.

I shriek you could call this movie a romantic comedy, or you could call it a romance, or you could call it drama, or you could call it exact life — Steinbeck was like that — he was into true life.

This is, I agree, an underrated film. It’s lawful that there are slower parts, and if you don’t like narration in films then you won’t like this one noteworthy. If you’re looking for a barn-burner action thriller this is NOT the film for you. But if you are looking for spirited character and location development you will bask in this film.

Nolte and Winger have wonderful on-screen chemistry, and you will relish being the mouse in the corner are you peer their developing relationship.

5 stars for the thoughtful crowd.

Alan Holyoak

It’s determined that the majority of viewers who’ve watched this movie disagree with the reviewer so disappointed by it’s pacing and verisimilitude. I’m gripping why anyone suited of scattering terms such as ‘egregious contrivances’ in their review of a light romantic comedy was assigned to anything based on Steinbeck’s work in the first situation. A populist romantic comedy is one film category where it may be wiser to trust the thought of the viewers who’re raving about it over the sneering technical quibbles of a critic armed with a thesaurus. Populist film based on populist fiction simply may not be the best assignment for any reviewer clearly unable to climb off what must be a most sorrowful corncob. For ordinary folks not tremulous by references to egregious contrivances and verisimilitude, other viewers who’ve seen Cannery Row unite in recommending the movie for it’s performances by Nolte and Winger. M. Emmet Walsh outdoes himself as Mack, nearly as generous a performance as his masterpiece in ‘Blood Simple’. Cannery Row and Sweet Thursday were among the sweetist and funniest books that Steinbeck produced. Perhaps all the humor that the rest of us enjoyed in the film combining the novels was difficult to delight in while perched atop that uncomfortable cob. For Steinbeck fans, or fans of romantic comedy, this film won’t disappoint. We join together in urging anyone suffering from egregious map phobia to behold immediate support at the nearest competent proctologist.

“In the United States things have changed a lot, and it’s hard to construct excellent exiguous films now. The avaricious studios couldn’t care less about safe films.”–Woody Allen.

Woody Allen has said that European audiences are more receptive to his films these days than American audiences. Vicky Cristina Barcelona (2008) is his fourth European movie, and in many ways his most French film yet. Situation in Avilés, Barcelona, and Oviedo, Vicky Cristina Barcelona follows Allen’s London films, Match Point (2005), Scoop (2006), and Cassandra’s Dream (2007) . It stars Scarlett Johansson (Lost in Translation), Javier Bardem (No Country for Faded Men), Patricia Clarkson, and Penélope Cruz (Volver), and tells the anecdote of a lovers’ threesome. Shortly after arriving in Barcelona on vacation, two young American women in their 20s, Vicky (Rebecca Hall) and Cristina (Johansson), are invited by a smooth-talking artist, Juan Antonio (Javier Bardem) to utilize a weekend in Oviedo, drinking wine and making cherish with him. Because she is engaged to be married, pragmatic Vicky is reluctant at first. Cristina, however, is inaugurate to the seduction. The two women secure Juan Antonio’s proposal, and accompany him to Oviedo, where they soon behold the painter has a thing for his handsome, but emotionally unstable estranged-wife, María Elena (Cruz) . After Juan and Vicky drink wine and produce treasure, Cristina, Juan, and María Elena soon win themselves living together. It becomes evident to Cristina that Juan Antonio and María Elena are calm madly in fancy with each other. Bardem and Cruz bring a chemistry to the mask that sizzles. Ultimately, the film then becomes a spellbinding Woody Allen meets Éric Rohmer (Eric Rohmer’s Six Just Tales - Criterion Collection) meets Pedro Almodóvar (Volver) exploration of the dynamics of this sexually free-spirited lovers’ threesome, contrasted by Vicky’s more outmoded relationship with her plain, Fresh York buttoned-down care for interest, Doug (Chris Messina) . Impartial as Manhattan was central to Manhattan, Barcelona features prominantly in Vicky Cristina Barcelona, especially Gaudí’s Park Güell. Noteworthy like a obedient French film, this intelligent movie ends on a tag that is both poignant and shadowy, with everyone a microscopic wiser in the kill. Once the celluloid adore poet of Manhattan, with Vicky Cristina Barcelona Allen reveals he is mighty wiser now when it comes to the ways of the heart. It is “a very sunless film” (as Allen calls it) only because of the message it sends about relationships. Some couples resolve for convention rather than the madness of genuine esteem. Others, like Juan Antonio and Maria Elena, experience true esteem with the level of chemistry we might call “soulmates,” only to salvage they cannot live together. To exhaust an ancient cliche, Juan Antonio can’t live with Maria Elena, but can’t live without her. Allen seems to suggest that all we can really hope for in the slay, after stumbling around in any relationship, is a limited wisdom. Dare I say that this is Woody Allen’s best work since Hannah and Her Sisters? Unlike that film, however, this is a really well-behaved film Allen could have never made in Hollywood, which generally prefers feel-good esteem stories with happily-ever-after endings.

12/05/08 Update: Vicky Cristina Barcelona, Jarvier Bardem, Rebecca Hall, and Penélope Cruz all received nods for Golden Globe Awards this week.

In “Vicky Cristina Barcelona,” Woody Allen begs to contradict another pundit of his age, Mick Jagger. Woody demonstrates in his latest movie that you can’t EVER acquire what you want, and you also can’t net what you need. He demonstrates this in the narrative of how Vicky (Rebecca Hall) and Cristina (Scarlett Johansson), two magnificent young Americans staying in Barcelona for a few months, react to the romantic overtures of the dashing, primally sexy artist Juan Antonio (Javier Bardem) . Vicky–a master’s candidate in “Catalan identity,” although she is not Catalan and barely speaks Catalan or even Spanish–finds that sex with Juan Antonio shakes up her previously solid feelings for her dullish American fiance, Doug (Chris Messina) . Cristina–a dilettantish photographer/filmmaker who is defined by the fact that she only knows what she DOESN’T want in a relationship with a man–finds greater satisfaction with Juan Antonio, at least until Maria Elena (Penelope Cruz), Juan Antonio’s volatile, insanely jealous ex-wife, shows up.

Some critics have opined that “Vicky Cristina Barcelona” is a hackneyed blast at naive Americans left at sea by European sexual sophistication. However, I contemplate it’s more a delineation of Woody’s basic notion that happiness in esteem is transitory at best. How can you possibly bear up Juan Antonio and Maria Elena–who are constantly at each other’s throats, to the point that Maria Elena brandishes knives and guns–as an example of sexual sophistication? They can’t live with each other, they can’t live without each other, but she may slay up killing him, herself, and a few innocent bystanders. As enacted in a scintillating performance by Cruz, Maria Elena embodies the eternal irrationality of treasure, a blind craziness that–at least in Woody’s view–stamps an irrevocable expiration date on even the tenderest, most ardent fancy.

Not quite a comedy but certainly not a tragedy, “Vicky Cristina Barcelona” is a rueful commentary on the constant dissatisfactions of like and life, made all the more bittersweet by the heartbreakingly comely scenes of Barcelona and Catalunya wrapped in golden light by photographer Javier Aguirresarobe. The film offers us multiple pleasures–not least the sterling performances–yet, in the destroy, it feels itsy-bitsy. There are too many of Woody’s familiar tropes for us to win the film at face value, especially the overly familiar characters; personally, I’m tired of the heavenly, nubile young “Woody women” who are drawn vaguely toward a career in the arts yet are completely confused about everything except their need for hot sex. And, yes, Woody, we got the point decades ago that you assume life and the Universe meaningless; why do you always have to have one character in every movie (in this case, Juan Antonio) impart that plan baldly? “Vicky Cristina Barcelona” is worth seeing, but it falls short of being one of Woody’s masterpieces.

mahoromatic is a huge series if you like dramam and comedy, you sdhould go for it but the abominable section is a lottttttt of fanservice and breast shots so beware if you’re not at least 13. but it has a beneficial spot and a nice ending; and all in all mahoromatic is very nice. and it has awesome animation too its a sweet residence and suguru is very droll haha and remember… “I mediate dirty thoughts are poor”

This season picks up after everyone seems to have gotten over the confrontation from the previous finale. Everything seems to be getting befriend to “Normal”. Suddenly a petite, restful girl with multicolored hair is stalking Suguru.

Introducing Minawa. Every moment she’s on the shroud I’m reminded of stale Buster Keaton films. Her somber expression is as solid are a rock no matter what happens. Add to that her clumsiness and apologetic nature and every moment she’s on the shroud is an invitation to laugh and feel sorry for her at the same time. She is a tragic comedy all in one.

As far as the account is concearned, nothing really happens here that doesn’t involve Minawa. If it isn’t enough to deal with a secret army called Vesper fervent in a hidden war, now we have to deal with a secret society called Management. Minawa is somewhat a creation of this society as their scientits acquire sick pleasure in tampering with nature.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Mahoromatic: Something More Beautiful: V1 Maid In Training! Click Here

Beyond that, it’s mostly episodal comedy from here on out. Mahoro does a excellent job of disguising herself badly. Minawa seems to race over everything, even nothing at all. The perverted teacher is detached perverted. And all but two girls in the main cast wage war with their… ahem…. insecurities.

Most of the episodes on this disk are unprejudiced for fun. Technically, The Opening / Ending themes are not as delectable as the first season. I’m unruffled waiting for the chronicle to beget. But, the series has improved a bit. The humor is less sex oriented (which isn’t saying noteworthy) and the introduction of Minawa and Management give this season a narrative without re-hashing the conflicts of the first.

Again, Mahoromatic proves to be a fun series with a petite bitter aftertaste. With all that’s going on with everybody, one could almost not ogle the countdown timer.

This DVD is a rendition of a live stage play called “All About Zora” which was performed by Ruby Dee, Ossie Davis, Guy Davis and others. If I cannot have the stage play, this is the next best thing. In this body of work by literary immense Zora Neale Hurston, you accept folk tales, folk lores and other “lies” as Zora herself keep it. This DVD stage act includes Ruby Dee and Guy Davis, along with such famous stars as Flip Wilson, Louis Gossett, Jr., Lynn Whitfield, Paula Kelly, Roger E. Mosley (known for his role in Magnum P.I.), Beah Richards, Oscar Brown, Jr. and Eartha Robinson (a obsolete dancer on the TV note Fame) . The cast is rounded out with Olu Dara, Otis Sallid, Count Stovall and Leontine Guillard. There is a bonus interview with Zora’s personal secretary and a historian, who give even more insight into the woman called Zora. Absolutely spacious!

Zora is my Name! is perhaps the most astonishing original presentation that you can retract of the work of Zora Neale Hurston in terms of the spirit of African American culture she worked all of her life to mutter. Hurston was, herself, a broad believer in performance as a mode of communicating the cultural richness of the people she studied.

Videotaped in 1990 (according to Amazon), with an all star cast featuring the radiant Ruby Dee in the title role, and superbly supported by Richard Mosley, musician Olu Dara, Louis Gossett, Flip Wilson and Paula Kelly support when we were detached taking such glorious African American actors and musicians for granted. Effortlessly and gracefully, this ensemble cast blends a variety of Hurston texts and songs (I study most readily excerpts from Mules and Men and Dust Tracks on the Road) in an unique production written by Ruby Dee. Of course, since it was rcorded eighteen years ago, It doesn’t injure at all that everybody in the cast looks so young, vigorous and down upright fair. This production is both a classic and a deeply excellent thing to sight. Thank God it was preserved on dvd and made readily available for engage. I would snap it up before it disappears again. You’ve got to watch this for yourself.

…Kubrik masterminded Dr. Strangelove, loosely basing the movie upon the book “Red Alert” (the book is a completely serious Wintry War nuclear war scenario, but Strangelove is a complete and total farce) . “Strangelove” came out a year or two after the Cuban October missile crisis, a year after US President John Kennedy was assassinated as well as 2 other contemporaneous films, the smart and paranoid “The Manchurian Candidate” and the serious treatment of the same book, “Fail Pleasurable.”

Kubrik originally residence out to do a serious treatment of the book. But Kubrik found as he tried to manufacture the screenplay that he kept running into scenes that he ended up writing as satire. Recognizing the challenge, Kubrik enlisted the talents of one of the best comedic screenwriters in Hollywood, Terry Southern, to do the screenplay.

Casting the film was allotment genius and portion hit-and-miss gratified accident. … Somehow Slim Pickens’ name came up and Pickens current the role of the B-52 bomber pilot. Even more ironic yet, Slim Pickens was more conservative than Dan Blocker, but Pickens never caught on during the film’s production that Dr. Strangelove was a comedy, noteworthy less a satire and a farce unsympathetic to the official propaganda of the chilly war.

In of itself, it was a funny master stroke telling Pickens play the role seriously. Pickens was apparently no substantial wit, so Kubrik was able to retain Pickens completely unaware that Pickens was actually playing in a comedy, not a serious war movie (one can only hold that the humor of the set was not lost on the other cast members, including James Earl Jones who played Capt. Kong’s bombardier.. “Don’t scream Slim this is all a astronomical joke, we have to let him assume this is a right war movie.” ) .

Other than Peter Sellers’ roles, George C. Scott (later in “Patton”) and Beneficial Hayden delivered memorable performances. Both were obviously instructed to play their roles “over the top.” Kubrik instructed Scott to overact the role of the cigar-smoking, gut-slapping, martini-drinking & womanizing General Buck Turgidson (fetch it? Turgid-son? ) . In the scene in the war room where Turgidson exuberantly proclaims the spectacle of a B-52 bomber evading radar by hedge-hopping, Kubrik instructed George C. Scott to deliberately overact the allotment. Kubrik had Scott re-take the scene several times, asking Scott to create it even more over-the-top than before. On the last pick of that scene, Scott practically performed it as a burlesque parody, which was of course, the final bewitch that Kubrik actually customary.

Sterling Hayden delivered a quick-witted performance as the psychotic Brigadier General Jack D. Ripper, the Air Force general who unilaterally orders the nuclear strike against the USSR. The confusion of Chilly War paranoia, paranoid psychosis and fake sexual power in Hayden’s scenes is the blackest of unlit satire. Totally over the top, ludicrous and frightenlingly possible (what if one of your top military brass really went insane and over-rode all the safe-guards against nuclear war? ) . The insane babblings of General Ripper residence the film’s direction and act as its centerpiece, delivering both Kubrik’s satire of anti-communist propaganda and the air of impossible odds for the rest of the film’s characters to overcome that they might somehow avert doomsday.

Peter Seller’s performances as the President, the British officer and Dr. Strangelove (a left-over Nazi scientist) are memorable, Sellers delivers the title role as the deranged wheelchair-bound Nazi scientist who suffers from involuntary palsied “Seig Hiels!” in his accurate arm. Again sex is the dependable underlying motive to yet another character and the opportunities for a sexually prodigious post-apocalyptic eugenic world brings the deranged Strangelove to a frenzied outburst of libidinal energy: “Mein Fuhrer! I can vwalk!” But as grand as I bask in Sellers’ roles, they seem overshadowed by the rest of the film’s characters. P>It comes probably of no surprise that the U.S. Air Force refused to relieve Kubrik in shooting the movie. Having to choice, Kubrik had to resort to mocking up the B-52 flying scenes and bomber interior cabin scenes as best he could (the bomber interior was apparently such a advantageous replica of the actual thing that the FBI launched an investigation into who gave Kubrik such a detailed layout of a B-52’s flight deck) . Appropriately, the exterior B-52 flying scenes absorb a humorous flaw if you spy closely enough: In one scene, as the damaged bomber hedge-hops across the Siberian taiga (northern boreal forest), you can view that the underlying shadow of the plane is actually that of a four-engine propellor aircraft and doesn’t match the profile of the overlaid B-52 model.

Suffice it to say, when the movie came out, it was not universally received or even widely understood. It was drummed by political commentators and movie reviewers who found it to be tasteless and sophomoric. The studio was very concerned about the potential a negative backlash from its release (deem that in the same year, the Manchurian Candidate was withdrawn from theaters after Kennedy was assassinated) . An internal memo described Dr. Strangelove as “a tremendous, sick malefic joke” and questioned the wisdom of even releasing the movie at all. After all, the movie starts off with B-52’s and tanker planes copulating during mid-flight refuelings, displays Air Force “Peace is Our Profession” billboards in the midst of a fire fight between the US Army and Air Force security, depicts two Air Force generals as complete sex-obsessed baffoons, one a psychotic and the other a braying ass, delivers a deranged Nazi scientist and finally a cowboy pilot bucking the biggest phallic bronco of his career (never mind blowing up the world) .

I can contemplate of few other films whose film makers so defied convention and created a myth that really turned old wisdom on its head. Dr. Strangelove keeps coming at you as one dismal scene after another, interspersed with segments of complete straight-faced dead-pan, piling them all on until the fateful extinguish. When Pickins died in 1983, CBS news anchor Dan Rather delivered the obituary replete with the out retract of Pickins riding the bomb (Perhaps DeForest Kelley topped that and made pleasurable on his threat to have “He’s tiresome, Jim” engraved on his tombstone….) .

There are some things you fair can’t live down: Being the face that gets a vast closing falling scene that leads to the extinguish of all life on Earth happens to be one of those things. Dreadful Slim, he’s probably suffering in a purgatory of a Liberal Methodist heaven.

In closing, I have to agree with that long-forgotten studio executive who wrote in the memo: Dr. Strangelove *IS* a vast, sick malefic joke. But it is one of the finest sizable, sick malefic jokes ever created, and stands as a film masterpiece. Those who extoll the virtues of this fil

I doubt that you could imagine how grand it would wound me to give a single-star rating to an edition of the film I assume to be the singular greatest contribution to the motion characterize. However, the current “40th Anniversary” edition of Stanley Kubrick’s Dr. Strangelove, Or: How I Learned To Discontinuance Worrying And Treasure The Bomb is, unquestionably, requiring of such a rating. Why?, you ask.

Because about fifteen to twenty percent of the conceal image has been removed!!!

If you grasp a observe, you will gawk that this modern “Special” edition of Dr. Strangelove is presented in anamorphic widescreen, with a 1.66:1 aspect ratio. This, as you can secure from examining older editions of the film, is the first time the film has ever been presented in such a manner. The reason why (and you may cross-check this with the Internet Movie Database [IMDb] or any book on Stanley Kubrick worth its salt) is because Dr. Strangelove was NOT FILMED in 1.66:1. It was technically filmed with a varying aspect ratio (the reasons for which are peaceful not fully explicated, as far as I’ve seen), but, in general, it was filmed in about 1.33:1.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Dr. Strangelove or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb! Click Here

So, you ask, how does a film shot in 1.33:1 obtain presented in 1.66:1? Did someone return to the current negative and tell material previously hidden from stare, lost on every print and VHS, Beta, laserdisc and DVD copy heretofore released?

NO!

They simply chop off the top and bottom of the hide!!!

Such things are not unprecedented. An extremely similar case is the so-called “panoramic” Gone With The Wind. The film, made in 1939 (before there was anything BUT 1.33:1, the “Academy” aspect ratio), when released in the Panavision/Technorama age of the mid-1960’s was similar chopped and changed to magically become 2.35:1. This edition was released on video and DVD a few times before, finally, it was restored to its fresh 1.33:1 glory.

Stanley Kubrick was absolutely eminent for his perfectionism and auteur place in the film industry, and I cannot maintain that a company proposing to release a definitive “Special” edition of his greatest masterpiece would be so heartless as to unnecessarily delete a edifying fraction of the mask.

Please avoid this unusual, bastardized Dr. Strangelove, Or: How I Learned To Cessation Worrying And Fancy The Bomb. While the few unusual extras thereon are of interest, they can easily be seen via rental from the local video store, as suplemental to the last “Special Edition” of the DVD (which, incidentally, clearly states on the help that it is “Presented in the new aspect ratio of approximately 1.33:1″.

Thank you,

Marc-David Jacobs

P.S. For those of you keen in seeing the dreadful editing job for yourselves, feel free to go out and rent the fresh edition and the previous edition and go to seven minutes and forty-eight seconds, which is the outrageous tight shot of the B-52’s CRM-114 decoder book. As you will gawk, an entire line of text on the top, and about one-and-a-half on the bottom are not completely missing.

I approached this DVD with caution, never having seen the film before and noting its three-star review here, but I came away incredibly elated.

I partially blame the trailers for this film for the disappointment expressed in some of these reviews (the rest of the blame rests simply on the closed minds of today’s moviegoers) . When I first saw the trailer I expected a repulsive occult film filled with demons and supernatural happenings. That would’ve been an easier film to invent. What I saw, however, was so powerful better.

This is a slow-paced film, which moves along quietly, gracefully, and keeps you glued to the hide for its entirety. Cast performances are all incredible, especially Depp, of course, who continues to resolve the most inspiring projects in film today. There are no grotesque demons and very few special effects. Polanski’s subtle touch creates images that etch themselves in your mind nonetheless. One example is the wheelchair-bound Baroness careening across the room to burst into her office (don’t want to spoil any more) . Suffice it to say that determined images in this film are as terrifyingly memorable as Kubrick’s twins in THE Lustrous, for example.

Although this film is not a “panic” film by any standards, I found myself genuinely timid throughout. Immoral is always unbiased around the corner. You never doubt its existence and you’re terrorized of the moment when it may drawl itself.

Empty your mind of all preconceived ideas about this film before viewing, and it will be a very worthwhile experience. It is not a scare film. It is definitely an occult film that takes a new examine at the frail theme of His Unholiness making an appearance on earth. The Ninth Gate has a splendid cast who fabricate their parts well under the direction of a director with a worldwide reputation for genius, especially when it comes to depicting the darker matters of the mind. The film is what you would quiz from such a combination of human talent. The strictly human characters prove themselves in such a plan that it becomes possible to read their minds and feel their motives. In so doing, the necessity of the one supernatural character becomes abundantly definite.

Johnny Depp plays Curso, a dealer in and locator of rare books who, as Balkan (Langella’s character) points out, is qualified of trust because his loyalty can be bought. Balkan pays the apt ticket to have Depp move from Recent York to Lisbon and Paris in search of the two other copies of a rare book Balkan has recently acquired–one that was supposedly co-authored by the Devil and one of his most accurate disciples, the latter of whom was burned at the stake in the 1600’s for his believe loyalty. Balkan insists that he thinks only one copy of the book is superior, and he wants to fabricate clear his copy is the one.

It is determined that Depp has no understanding what he is getting himself into, but for all his cynical disregard of humanity, he becomes the “innocent” in this anecdote, because he is the one person who becomes aware and admits early on that he has no opinion what he has gotten into. Balkan says he obtained his copy of the book in a good sale from the owner fair before the owner committed suicide. However, the archaic owner’s widow insists that the book is hers and becomes the first person trying to end Curso in an exertion to earn it back–after the best of feminine wiles don’t gain the job done. At this point Curso’s “guardian angel”, whom he calls Green Eyes, enters the relate in the guise of a wandering college student whose appearances at first inspire distrust and terror until she begins the rather reliable habit of repeatedly saving Curso’s life.

The mysterious “keys” that will initiate the Ninth Gate and let the Devil rupture through are contained in the area of nine woodcuts within each book. The woodcuts each possess captivating jumbled adaptations of various images from the Tarot’s Major Arcana–combinations that give a clue to anyone familiar with the cards and their meanings that everyone’s ragged ideas regarding the occult were either dreary inferior all along or they are about to undergo–forgive the expression–one hell of a change. Curso notes that there are notable variations in the woodcuts in each volume of the three existing copies of the book. Apparaently some were drawn by the Devil himself and some by his advocate.

Curso also notes that he is now being hounded not only by the avaricious widow and her hit man, but also by Balkan, who seems to know his every go, not to mention having knowledge about the violent deaths of the owners of the other two manuscripts. Finally it is revealed that Balkan and the widow are fervent in a literal battle to the death to become the Master who controls the Ninth Gate and the group of Devil worshippers who are this century’s congregation of those who have been waiting for that Master since the book was first printed 350 years earlier.

There is humor throughout this film, providing critical droll relief at some very tense moments. That humor is nowhere more evident than in the scene in which the widow (who has managed to temporarily win Balkan’s copy of the book) is leading the gathering of pathetic self-styled Satanists in an even more pathetic, sterotypical sad mass. The scene at its opening is so mundane, you want to groan. Then as it progresses, you realize that is fragment of the director’s intentional imagery to display how dull the theories about conjuring up and dealing with Broken-down Scratch have always been.

This guy is supposed to be the all grand Prince of Darkness, fair? This is the guy who can select your soul into hell for all eternity if you agree to the plot. And yet throughout history it is believed that if you design a circle around a pentagram on the ground or floor and stand in it, then teach a few incantations, the Devil will appear with his forked tail between his legs and do whatever you ask. This is the worthy adversary of the Almighty? Polanski has a very refreshing pace on that view.

In The Ninth Gate we look Satan as a stronger contender–one perfectly sterling of appointing his “chosen one” among men. Tired, evidently, of insulting requests to preside as Master of Ceremonies at orgies and to give individual megalomaniacs the power to rule the world, the Devil has decided to accelerate the present himself and to confer the honors of being his Commander in Chief on a person who has proven himself a champion on the battlefield of mundane deplorable.

As for that “obscure” ending, we peek Curso walking alone toward the last eerie combination of Tarot symbols–The Star (hope) imposed over the twin towers of The Moon (a card generally having to do with the deepest and sometimes most nasty elements of the occult) . One tower is slow the other, giving the appearance of the two merging into one Tower (symbol of total destruction) . Evidently the party games are over.

A richly textured, beautifully filmed and well-acted recent gothic record. I highly recommend it.
